What should I expect?

You can expect to be involved in projects from the start. New recruits commonly become involved with one major project in some depth, but can expect to be asked to help out on a number of others on a smaller scale, providing a 'taster' in a range of technical areas and project styles.

Our clients and projects are highly varied, in their objectives, technical content, scale and duration. You may find yourself contributing to a major piece of policy research for a central government department, a transport assessment in connection with a private residential or commercial developer, development of a transport strategy for a city or region, or a bid for a railway or toll road franchise, or for a new tram system.

Much of MVA Consultancy's work is in the UK, but we currently have ongoing major projects in the Middle East, Ireland and France, offering opportunities for short- and longer-term postings. We are also making plans for further overseas expansion.

What would my role be?

Depending on your background and interests, and your initial team placement, your role could include:

  • supervising data collection on site;
  • checking and collating data and carrying out preliminary data analysis;
  • setting up simulated networks of traffic and public transport systems, or detailed representations of complex junctions;
  • using geographic information systems (GIS) to analyse and present data.

You will be expected to be proactive in understanding how your own contribution fits into the wider objectives of the projects on which you are working, and to take responsibility for your own work. You will learn to document clearly what you have done and to draft technical notes or sections of reports to go to the client in a clear and concise fashion and at an appropriate level of technical detail. At all times you will be working alongside, and supported by, others in the project team.
