The Department
for Transport is to conduct research into how to improve the delivery
of road safety education, to help meet its current targets for casualty
reduction.
The Government's
target is to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured
in Great Britain as a result of road traffic accidents by 40%, with
a more ambitious target of 50% for children. Both are to be achieved
by 2010 with progress being measured against the average for 1994-98.
Alongside engineering and enforcement measures, road safety education
is a key part of the strategy for achieving these goals.
MVA has been
appointed to enhance understanding of the factors that influence
the effectiveness of road safety education, training and publicity
(ETP); to identify measures that are necessary to raise the quality,
delivery and status of ETP; and thus to maximise effectiveness of
the delivery of road safety ETP at a local level.
Over 18 months,
MVA will conduct research amongst those who are directly responsible
for delivering road safety education, including Road Safety Officers
(RSOs) and educators, and with others indirectly involved. In addition,
good practice ideas from related fields will be examined by consulting
with professionals in those fields, including other areas of personal,
social and health education (PSHE).
