MVA Consultancy has been commissioned by the Rail Safety Standards Board (RSSB) to catalogue, review and analyse current rail and sustainable development research in Great Britain, and find examples of best practice in Europe and internationally.
The purpose of the research is to establish a clear picture of the state of knowledge on sustainable development issues relevant to rail in Great Britain and to identify where gaps are present. The review will be utilised in the development of the Industry Sustainable Development Strategy and RSSB's input (December 2006) to the DfT's Railway Strategy.
The research review has a broad remit, covering environmental issues such as climate change and energy use, economic issues such as the external costs and benefits of rail, and social issues such as accessibility, employment and safety.
