MVA recently hosted the National Kerbcraft Conference
in the Council House in Birmingham.
Almost 150 road safety practitioners involved in providing
child pedestrian training using the Kerbcraft model attended.
The day comprised a variety of presentations, workshops,
and awards for the Kerbcraft School of the Year and Volunteers of
the Year.
Ten workshops were provided in the afternoon and delegates
chose two of their choice.Workshops included 'dealing with behavioural
difficulties'; 'ice Breakers for Children'; and 'How to Work Effectively
with School Travel Advisors'.
St Joseph and St Bedes School in Bury won the School
of the Year Award, and the Volunteers of the Year were Agnes Simm
from Gateshead; Michelle Parker from Stoke on Trent and Mel Buck
from Kent. Awards were presented by Andrew Colski, Head of the vulnerable
road users branch of the Road User Safety Division at the Department
for Transport. See photos

Background to Kerbcraft
Kerbcraft is a child pedestrian training scheme aimed
at teaching pedestrian skills to 5 -7 year olds, over a 12 month
period, by means of practical training rather than in a classroom.
Children are taught in pairs or groups of three, by trained volunteers,
at roadside environments close to their schools. The programme which
children will follow is broken down into three parts, each of which
require 4-6 sessions of around 30 minutes duration. The first part
is concerned with recognising safe versus dangerous roadside locations;
the second with crossing safely at parked cars, and the third with
crossing safely near junctions. Kerbcraft provides a manual which
takes volunteers through the exact teaching method required for
each of these three parts.
The Department for Transport and Scottish Executive
have funded 115 Kerbcraft schemes throughout England and Scotland
as part of the National Pilot Network of Child Pedestrian Training
Schemes. These schemes are run in 64 different Local Authorities
throughout the country, each for a period of 3 years. Thirty eight
schemes have already received three years of Government funding
for the pilot study, and many of these are continuing with new sources
of funding. Sixty five schemes are still being funded through the
National Pilot.
Over 1000 schools have now been involved in delivering
Kerbcraft training to date; over 3000 volunteers (mostly parents)
have been involved in teaching the children; and over 60,000 children
have received training.
