MVA Consultancy puts the focus on passengers

<< Go Back

Leading transport specialists MVA Consultancy carried out vital research for Passenger Focus to feed into the government’s latest rail White Paper, Delivering a Sustainable Railway.

In the report, £10 billion was pledged by the government to cope with a 20 per cent rise in passenger figures over the next seven years.

MVA’s team of experts carried out a national passenger survey, asking passengers to rate various elements of their rail experience in terms of the service they should expect to receive, and where they would most like to see improvements in the rail service.

A cross-section of rail passengers at 126 train stations covering Scotland, Wales and all government office regions in England, completed tailored questionnaires during March and April this year.

Improving value for money came out as the top priority for improvement according to the results of the study, followed by improvements in the number of train services, punctuality and seat availability.

Nick Newton, MVA's Director Rail Strategy and Development, said: "As the voice of the passenger, Passenger Focus now hold a pivotal position in the Railway.

“We were pleased to support them in their determination to consistantly utilise high quality data and analysis.

“Increased investment will yield most benefit when targeted at delivering the right sort of growth through meeting clearly identified and legitimate passenger preferences.”

Martin Dix, projects director at MVA added: “Identifying passenger priorities for improvement in England, Scotland and Wales can help Passenger Focus, the Department for Transport (DfT), the Welsh Assembly Government and the Scottish Executive ensure they can clearly align resources to these areas of priority.
