Putting noise on the map

A series of noise maps have been developed for the Scottish Government which will allow it to comply with current European noise mapping legislation.
The strategic noise maps of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Scotland's main transport network and airports have been developed in accordance with the European Union's Environmental Noise Directive (END). The maps can be viewed on www.scottishnoisemapping.org.
The aim of the END is to provide a common approach across the European Union to avoid, prevent and reduce the harmful effects of exposure to environmental noise.
Member States are required to inform the public about environmental noise and its effects and produce strategic noise maps for large urban areas, major roads, railways and airports.
MVA Consultancy was part of the consortium, led by Hamilton and McGregor Acoustics Consultants, which delivered the strategic noise maps.
MVA’s role involved sourcing, cleaning and collating roads data which was used to develop individual transport source maps and amalgamated maps of the Scottish major road network and the two qualifying urban agglomerations.
The consortium will continue to work with the Scottish Government to establish steering groups who will use the maps to produce detailed action plans by July next year.
MVA’s Deputy Director for Scotland and Ireland, Dr David Connolly, said: “the compilation of the road data was a major task, involving the integration of data from a number of sources and georectifying these to the OS MasterMap ITN road centreline . A key data set was the Transport Model for Scotland which provides validated traffic volumes and speeds for cars and goods vehicles. The traffic data was verified against traffic counts on major roads.
The road data supplied for the noise model also includes segmentation of the road network by road surface type and the location of walls, overbridges and underbridges which affect noise propagation.
The road noise maps will be a major tool for the steering groups in developing noise action plans and mitigation proposals, and we will continue to provide support to this process over the coming year”.
