Environmentally Sustainable Transport issues in Tokyo

<< Go Back

David Carter, MVA Consultancy Projects Director, spoke last week at a large part-televised symposium on Environmentally Sustainable Transport in Tokyo, Japan.  David’s presentation and panel discussion role considered some of the best practice in coordination and promotion of Mobility Management measures in the UK, and in Nottingham in particular.  Deep concern over the environmental impact of transport has led to an increasing interest in Mobility Management or ‘soft transport’ measures in Japan to support and encourage alternatives to car usage and build on the provision of new infrastructure such as the Toyamo ‘Portram’ light rail system and elevated busways in Nagoya.

David’s visit also included presenting and discussing road pricing developments in the UK to a group of officials and policy researchers hosted by the Institute of Highways Economics.  Increasing congestion in response to an upturn in the Japanese economy may require some form of demand management to ensure transport issues do not stifle economic recovery in the capital.

Building on this, officials from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and Institute of Behavioural Sciences are visiting the UK for discussions with MVA Consultancy staff concerning the London Area Transport Surveys.  Also included in the itinerary will be visits to TfL and to Nottingham City Council.
