Leading transport specialist MVA Consultancy has won a study competition to develop an integrated transport masterplan for the world’s largest man-made island.
The landmark Palm Deira is the third and largest island in Dubai with a projected population of over one million, covering 46 million square metres.
Organised by the Roads and Transport Authority and Palm Island developer Nakheel, MVA’s Dubai office led a winning team of consultants including Systra (leading international rail engineers) Sogreag (worldwide marine engineers) and Royal Haskoning (international architects) to finalise phases two and three of the project.
MVA and the consultants team produced an integrated network of causeway, bridges, tunnels, expressways, metro lines, water taxis and transit hubs including the Eye of Dubai with space for 10,000 parking spaces, cruise ship, ferry and transit terminal.
Dr Reza Mohammadi, general manager of MVA’s Dubai office, said: “Due to the huge scale of the development and its proximity to the densely populated city area, transport accesses to and from Palm Deira was a big challenge which required development of a transport plan with extensive coverage and capacity.
“This is by far the biggest development in Dubai generating high level of travel demand through residential, commercial, leisure, shopping and tourism activities. This enhances the capacity of MVA’s overseas office to play key roles in cutting-edge developments.
“It is also the first time both the transport authorities and major developers have initiated such study.
“The outcome will be vital to the whole of Dubai as it links the old and the new cities together, making room for growth and prosperity.”
