MVA Consultancy to study success of 20mph zone in Southwark

<< Go Back

MVA Consultancy has been appointed to carry out a review of 20mph zones in Southwark.

The leading transport planning specialist has been commissioned by the London Borough of Southwark to complete evidence-based research on the impact of the 20mph zones on road safety.

MVA’s multi-disciplinary team will also explore diverse factors impacting on the effectiveness of these areas such as calming methods, funding levels, streetscape design and land use.
The study will analyse accident statistics and traffic speed/flow and a sample of residents will be consulted to gauge their level of support for the 20mph zones. Stakeholders will be invited to participate in a workshop, the aim of which is to identify issues and opportunities for the future roll-out of the 20mph zone programme.

Paul Matthews, project director at MVA, said: “20mph zones have been implemented widely across the borough and are generally thought to provide benefits to road safety – but this research project will help to assess these benefits and any negative effects and will contribute to the development of good practice for the design, implementation and maintenance of 20mph zones”.
