Study launched to improve rail passenger information

MVA Consultancy has been appointed by Passenger Focus in a joint project with National Rail Enquiries to carry out a study that will explore passengers’ needs for rail travel information, and their priorities for improvements in current provision.
The study will help assess the match between passenger priorities, the industry’s vision for future services, and current ideas about how to deliver that vision.
The project will involve focus groups with commuters, business and leisure travellers and interviews with passengers who have impaired mobility, vision and hearing.
Project director Martin Dix said: “Research has consistently confirmed that rail users place a high priority on the availability of information, with non-users citing the lack of easily accessible, accurate and timely information as one of the most important obstacles to using public transport.
“The White Paper states that the Government intends to focus the standards of information provision across the rail network around the National Rail Enquiry Service (NRES), with NRES providing a single source of comprehensive information about timetables, service disruption, real–time running, fares and facilities.
“As the passengers’ representative body Passenger Focus is concerned to ensure that information provision is of the highest quality, and is directed and tailored to the needs of passengers.
“We are delighted to be working with both organisations, in partnership, to help develop a vision for information delivery that is aligned to passengers’ priorities.”
Janet Cardell, Passenger Focus head of research, concluded: “We are very pleased to be working with National Rail Enquiries to explore rail passengers’ views on the proposed vision for information delivery and how it meets passengers’ expectations.”
Jason Durk, Head of Information at National Rail Enquiries, said: “Ensuring that the train companies’ vision for passenger information is fit for purpose in passengers’ eyes is crucial.
“The results from this research will also help us deliver that vision by highlighting passengers’ key priorities in this area.”
