MVA Consultancy has completed a review of passenger transport information on behalf of Suffolk County Council.
The leading transport planning consultancy looked at best practice in the design of publicity materials and delivery through information channels, and made a number of recommendations to enhance the council's information services.
A strategy report and implementation plan was then developed to guide the delivery of information improvements over the next five years.
MVA’s work involved interviews and focus groups with members of the public to gauge their use of timetables, area guides, the internet and other media in planning their journeys.
The results were then used in the evaluation of a number of options with the preferred options being ranked according to their value for money.
Many of the preferred enhancements were found in the areas of electronic information and delivery via the internet, mobile phone and real-time information systems.
The study highlighted the need for traditional publicity materials in easy-to-use formats, looking at designs for printed handouts and how these could be better targeted at different market areas.
Ian Gray, User Support Manager for Passenger Transport at Suffolk County Council Services, said: “The County Council is committed to providing high quality, attractive public transport information via a variety of channels to suit passenger needs.
“This review has given us the opportunity to understand the information needs of both existing travellers and potential new customers.”
John Sutton, Director for Transport Information Systems at MVA Consultancy, said: “Public transport information is an important element in Suffolk County Council's promotion of more sustainable travel for work and non-work activities.
“The information strategy and implementation plan aim to provide a road map to meet the council's goals.”
