MVA reviews key sustainable school transport regulations

<< Go Back

MVA Consultancy has reported to the Department for Children, Families and Schools (DCSF) on the response of local authorities to new statutory sustainable transport duties.

Under the Education and Inspections Act (2006), authorities have a duty to develop strategies promoting and improving sustainable travel options to schools.

Sustainable transport experts, MVA Consultancy were commissioned to assess the quality of the Sustainable Modes of Travel Strategies published in 2007.

A total of 24 strategies were reviewed against a range of criteria developed by MVA’s specialist team.

The study found that overall the response had been positive but there was scope for improvement and some areas of omission, notably recognition of social inclusion and disability topics and integration of the strategies with accessibility planning.

Stuart Reid, MVA director of Sustainable Transport, said: “Most authorities appear to have responded to this duty in good faith.

“While we identified a number of areas requiring improvement, we have also highlighted some areas of excellent practice.

"We have advised DCSF of opportunities to improve sustainable transport to schools and we look forward to these strategies improving year on year, to increase travel options and better serve the needs of school communities."
