MVA Consultancy today launched a UK-wide competition
encouraging school-leavers to consider a career in the transport
planning industry.
The transport planning specialist launched the essay writing competition,
backed by Shadow Transport Secretary Theresa Villiers MP and Transport
Minister for Scotland Stewart Stevenson which asks students to discuss
the development of future sustainable transport policy.
The search is part of MVA’s 40th anniversary
celebrations and aims to help address the shortage of industry
skills in transport planning and engineering.
The winning student will have their university fees paid in full
for a transport-related undergraduate degree.
Schools and colleges across the country are being asked to actively
encourage sixth form pupils to participate in the competition, the
theme of which is Reducing the Impact of Transport on the Environment.
Entrants will submit a 1500-word essay which can take a science
fictional or fictional look at how a technology or behavioural change
will help reduce emissions, how transport policy can help reduce
the environmental effects of transport in a competitive global economy
and what range of policies would make the greatest impact.
MVA hopes the competition will make a positive contribution to the
skills shortage facing the UK transport planning sector and raise
awareness of careers across the industry.
Theresa Villiers MP, said: “MVA Consultancy’s competition
recognises the important role young people have to play in the future
of our transport industry.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to attract more of our top talent
into the industry in order to develop an efficient and innovative transport
system for the future.”
Stewart Stevenson, added: “One of the major challenges
and serious threats we face is global climate change, and I’m
delighted that the theme for the competition reflects the impact
of transport on climate change.”
Nigel Ash, chief executive of MVA Consultancy, added: “While
we will take some time this year to reflect on 40 years of achievements
at MVA, we also want to look forward to the future.
“The competition will give us the opportunity to gauge young
people’s perceptions of the future of transport and ways to
reduce its impact on the environment, while encouraging them to explore
career options which could see them playing a valuable part in shaping
the future of the industry.
“By offering the winner the financial support
needed for university we hope they will make the most of the opportunity.”
