MVA Consultancy to deliver health check on Centro's public transport database and EBSR software solution

MVA Consultancy has been commissioned to carry out a “health check” on Centro’s Public Transport Database (PTD) for bus services operating in the West Midlands.

The bus operators provide Centro with information on their services which is used keep information covering nearly 2,500 buses at over 12,500 bus stops and 1,000 Real Time Information (RTI) displays up to date.  The introduction of Electronic Bus Service Registration Software is key to the process of creating accurate and rapid data flows thus improving the quality of data provided to the passengers.

Public transport companies in the area have historically sent  their service information to the Traffic Commissioner and Centro using paper forms, maps, and email which is time-consuming and can lead to inaccurate data being loaded onto the PTD.

However, they are now beginning to use the Electronic Bus Service Registrations (EBSR) to transmit the service and timetable information electronically to the Traffic Commissioner and Centro using TransXChange (TXC) files.

MVA Consultancy will now deliver an independent “health check” of Centro's PTD and IT infrastructure to assess its ability to support  EBSR.

The work involves MVA Consultancy’s  Information Systems specialists visiting Centro and meeting with staff to assess PTD existing data, processes, and procedures. The findings will be summarised in a report which will outline the existing infrastructure and provide recommendations for improvements in the light of EBSR.

Followng the completion of the “health check”, MVA Consultancy will develop a sophisticated system that will import, export, and edit  the Electronic Bus Service Registrations in Centro’s PTD. The software will use a three-tier architecture and will provide a modern web-enabled user interface whilst linking with Centro’s existing SQL Server-based database.

Andy Smith, project manager at MVA Consultancy, said: “The system we are building will enable Centro to realise the full potential of EBSR, providing a seamless link between TransXChange and their existing Public Transport Database System.”
