SYSTRA and MVA Consultancy’s final report on a High Speed Rail Network Strategy for Britain was published by Greengauge 21 today (23 October).
It gives details of the analysis behind the Greengauge 21 publication ‘Fast Forward: A High-Speed Rail Strategy for Britain’ (published 16 September 2009).
SYSTRA and MVA Consultancy were joint principal consultants. advising Greengauge 21 on the strategy for high speed rail in Britain.
The study was based on a combination of SYSTRA’s world leading expertise in high speed rail systems engineering and MVA’s innovative capacity in demand forecasting, transport strategy and appraisal, who combined on this project to develop an overall high speed rail strategy.
Working closely with a steering group drawn from Greengauge 21’s Public Interest Group, the consultants determined the guiding principles that should drive a high speed rail strategy. Through investigation of a wide range of options, our study developed a long term strategy which complements the work done by others on the optimum first route for high speed rail.
John Segal, Director Rail at MVA Consultancy, said: “Our study demonstrates that not only is there an excellent case for a first high speed line but also for a network providing coverage of the majority of the country that will significantly improve capacity and economic connectivity between the major conurbations of the UK.”
Andrew Boagey, SYSTRA’s Business Director for Northern Europe, added: “Working in partnership with MVA we had all the right expertise necessary to engage with Greengauge 21’s Public Interest Group to identify guidelines for a deliverable strategy which is not only operationally feasible, but also fundamentally meets stakeholders’ needs”.
