MVA Consultancy to lead a consortium for the update of the Aviation Emissions and Evaluation of Reduction Options Modelling System (AERO-MS)

MVA Consultancy has been appointed by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) to lead a consortium including The National Aerospace Laboratories (NLR), The German Aerospace Centre (DLR), Transport Analysis Knowledge Systems (TAKS) and QinetiQ to undertake an update of the Aviation Emissions and Evaluation of Reduction Options Modelling System (AERO-MS).

The AERO-MS was developed in the 1990s as a policy assessment tool for quantifying the environmental and economic consequences of a wide range of aviation policies to reduce aircraft emissions.

The task for the consortium is to update the base database of this large and complex model, which contains records for all aircraft movement between city-pairs globally, volume of passengers, and volume of freight. The project will also include some key enhancements to ensure the model is in a position to perform robust impact assessments which will inform future European decision making in this area.

MVA, NLR, and TAKS, who have all been involved with the development of the AERO-MS for the past 15 years, are excited to welcome two new consortium members, DLR and QinetiQ, to the team.

Charles Scales, Director of Aviation and Airport Planning at MVA Consultancy, said: “The AERO-MS is a globally unique model which has been in development for more than 15 years and the update of its base data will ensure it remains one of the most powerful tools for assessing the economic and environmental impacts of EU aviation policy.”
