MVA to examine rail ticket choices

<< Go Back

MVA Consultancy has been appointed to explore trends in choice of rail tickets.

The leading transport planning specialist was commissioned by the Rail Passenger Demand Forecasting Council to study how customers choose between different types of ticket depending on their price and other charateristics.

The work will involve using estimated choice models to forecast this response, which will cover the full range of non-season rail tickets outside travelcard areas.

MVA’s team of experts will then use a number of case studies to validate the analysis, including exploring how factors such as increased internet based ticket sales affect choice of ticket type.

A draft section of Passenger Demand Forecasting Handbook (PDFH) will be prepared as well as an evidence-based report.

Adam Mason, project manager at MVA Consultancy, said: “MVA has carved a successful track record in passenger demand forecasting and was last year appointed to undertake a vital update of the Passenger Demand Forecasting Handbook for ATOC in order to produce a set of proposed draft recommendations to new parameter values for the drivers of rail demand.

“We have advised many clients on the impacts of fares changes and assisted ATOC to develop the simplified fares structure implemented in 2009.”
