The ESPON 2006 programme is implemented in the framework
of the Community Initiative INTERREG III and covers a period of five
years from January 2002 to December 2006. The aim of the ESPON is
to take concrete steps in applying the European Spatial Development
Perspective (ESDP) and, in particular, to improve knowledge, research
and information on territorial development as well as to prepare
for an enlarged territory of the European Union.
The Programme was launched in response to a call by
the Ministers responsible for Spatial Planning of the EU for a better
balance and
polycentric development of the European territory.
In December 2003 we completed our mid-term
evaluation which focuses on the continuing relevance of the programme strategy,
its effectiveness
and the quality of implementation structures and makes recommendations
for improvements to each of these issues. This was updated in
2005 to assist in the preparation of the ESPON form 2007-2013.
In 2006 we carried out a further study on ESPON for
DG Regio to identify lessons from the programme help finalise the
planning
of the new
programme.
