Lancashire cycle design guidelines

<< Go Back

We were commissioned by Lancashire County Council in the Autumn of 2002 to produce a full cycle guidance document, to aid and assist Developers and Officers in providing safe and worthwhile cycle facilities. Our work has included a comprehensive review of existing cycle guidance, discussion of ideas with a formalised steering group (made up of local cyclist interest groups) and then production of a final guidance document, in paper and electronic formats. Topics that are included on the guidance note include:

  • cycle design principles;
  • crossing and junction design;
  • parking and the interaction with public transport;
  • providing cycle routes within and segregated from the carriageway; and
  • provision for cyclists as part of development proposals.

In addition, we have run day-long workshops to advise potential users of the guidance in the usage of the guidance note, and to discuss any issues that stem from the report. Feedback from these workshops has been included in the final cycle guidance, which was published late in 2005.
