MVA was a sub to Research International on a substantial
project to design and develop a computer system to be operated by
30 staff in an address geocoding office. The software automatically
geocodes London Area Travel Survey (LATS) questionnaire addresses
used to describe each journey. LATS fieldwork was undertaken in London
and south-east England on behalf of Transport for London (TfL) from
Autumn 2000-Summer 2002 and included large-scale household travel
survey diaries and on-mode surveys of passengers travelling by road,
bus and rail. Part of the survey data processing involved attaching
geocodes to the trip origin, trip destination and home addresses
collected in the surveys. The process of deriving geocodes was not
straightforward however, because survey addresses could be incomplete,
poorly written or lacking postal address characteristics. The software
developed by MVA was designed to enable the coding task to be tackled
more effectively.
