We were commissioned by the London Borough of Merton
to develop a programme of accident remedial/danger reduction schemes
for Mitcham Town Centre, based on an analysis of casualties and accidents
within the study area. The Council was concerned about the number
of personal injury accidents occurring in the core shopping area
of Mitcham town centre - some 84 in the previous three years. Appropriate
accident remedial/danger reduction schemes would enable the client
to meet national and London targets for accident reduction. The emphasis
was on low cost, highly effective schemes that deliver good rates
of return on investment. We analysed road safety problems, identified
suitable schemes and, at Stage 2, advised on their detailed design.
