MVA was approached by the North West Regional Assembly
to undertake an assessment of the accessibility of the major centres,
cities and
towns identified in the Regional Spatial Strategy. This assessment
not only looked at the movement of people to the centres by car
and public transport, but also the movement of freight by road, and
navigable
waterway. The study was used to inform the site selection for the
review of the Regional Spatial Strategy, and also was fundamental
in demonstrating a 'best pracice' approach for the use of accessibility
assessment by Local Highway Authorities. The work was undertaken
using the Department for Transport ACCESSION software developed
by MVA and additional custom applications to allow the modelling
over
such a wide area.
