The railway route between Belfast and Dublin is operated
jointly by Translink (NIR) and Iarnrod Eireann (IE). The route has
attracted £120 million investment in both infrstructure and
rolling stock in recent years and the new Enterprise service was
launched in September 1997, providing eight services in each direction
Monday-Saturdays and five services on Sundays. Demand for the cross-border
rail service has grown by more than 41% since it was launched. There
has also been a very substantial increase in the volume of Irish
Rail local passengers using the service. This rapid growth exceeded
previous forecasts and has led to insufficent capacity to cater for
demand at peak times. Against this background, we made reccommendations
as to future rolling stock requirements to meet the projected patronage
to the year 2012.
