Evaluation of Pilots to Improve Primary to Secondary
School Transitions

We evaluated three pilot education initiatives in
North Lanarkshire, East Ayrshire and Glasgow City to ease the transition
between primary and secondary schools. One pilot had a particular
focus on literacy, one on numeracy and the third was a whole school
pilot for vulnerable children in an area of social deprivation. The
research was focussed primarily on academic and curricular transition
but also sought to understand the pastoral and emotional transition.
We had to compare and contrast different approaches in order to
evaluate what works best and in what circumstances. We achieved this
through extensive secondary data analysis using anonymised pupil
records and other school and local authority data; through interviews
and focus groups with teachers, parents, pupils and local authority
representatives.
