Under the Hong Kong Government's Railway Development
Strategy 2000, the region's railway network is set to expand by around
70% to 2013. Five new passenger railway projects and a Port Rail
Line will bring 70% of the population and 80% of employment to within
walking distance of a railway station and boost railway's share of
public transport trips to 45%.
In 2001, MVA completed a substantial study on behalf of the railway
company Mass Transit Railway Corporation Limited (MTRCL) to prepare
the transport aspects of the organisation's competitive bid to build
and operate one of the proposed new lines. The Sha Tin to Central
Line (SCL) will extend from the New Territories in the north to reach
the heart of the Central Business District on Hong Kong Island via
a fourth railway crossing of the harbour. We produced patronage and
revenue forecasts for SCL, including detailed scenario testing and
station planning.
On completion, the route is expected to make a significant contribution
to the increasing transport needs of Hong Kong's growing population,
in a sustainable manner.
