Research into reducing traffic impact on streetscene.
We were appointed by the Department for Transport (DfT) to provide
expertise on street scene and urban design issues in order to reduce
the effects of traffic management measures upon our streets. We
teamed up with Colin Davis Associates and Urban Initiatives to produce
a team of consultants with a combined experience of traffic management
and streetscape second to no other in the UK.
Our team of consultants
addressed the DfTs increasing concern that the signs, signals and
other paraphernalia of local traffic management schemes have become
excessive in some areas and consequently detract from the street
scene. By undertaking on-street trails and through reference to
best practice case studies, both in the UK and overseas, our study
team
demonstrated how traffic management measures can be integrated
into existing street environments without threatening the liveability,
vitality, viability and character of town and city centres and
neighbourhoods
as well as rural areas. Five streets were selected for on street
trials and through the production of virtual design and high quality
3D photo-rendered CAD graphics, the ways in which traffic management
measures can be successfully integrated into a street scene were
demonstrated (DfT). The project team produced a Good Practice Guide
which will look into consideration which traffic management measures
bring about the most benefits in terms of whole life cost as well
as aesthetic acceptance within the streetscape.
