We were appointed to undertake consultation
on the schools admissions system for community and voluntary controlled
schools in Surrey.
The research involved a series of focus groups with parents in
each of the 11 districts in the County as well as council members;
a detailed face-to-face interviewer survey with a representative
sample of parents and postal survey of all parents currently applying
for school places. The study examined the current system of allocating
school places compared with an alternative system based on different
allocation criteria. The methodology involved the presentation
of case study schools in each district illustrating how admissions
would be affected by each system for these schools. The consultation
provided Surrey with a good understanding of the public's views
on the schools admissions system for use in developing policy in
this area.
