Environmental Constraints Mapping

<< Go Back

The conventional approach to major scheme development is to come up with a design and then determine its environmental impact, refining it in order to minimise or mitigate adverse effects. Environmental constraints mapping takes the opposite approach – identify the key components of the receiving environment and their sensitivity to development, then use this to determine the best fit for the development. This approach can save both time and money as well as ensuring a smoother journey through the planning consent process.

We have developed an innovative GIS-based Environmental Constraints Analysis Tool (EnviroCAT) that allows us to map and analyse hundreds of environmental and planning constraints for any given location. Where multiple constraints overlap and combine to form ‘hotspots’ these can be quickly analysed to allow informed decisions on mitigation or refinements to a development project to be made.

Utilising the extensive GIS data management and analysis capability in our Transport Information Systems team, we are also able to create custom databases to store, manage and analyse environmental information. These can be further developed as part of more detailed EIA and SEA studies, providing an audit trail showing how environmental constraints have informed the development planning and decision-making process.
